The beginnings of Sanyo Gutiérrez
Born in San Luis, Argentina, on 15 June 1984, he began to play padel at the age of 11. At 15, he made his debut on the professional circuit, and at the age of 22, he decided to move to Spain to take his career to the next level.
Between 2007 and 2009, he reached several quarter-finals on the Padel Pro Tour circuit with various partners. It was in 2009 that he teamed up with Guillermo Lahoz, which helped improve his game.
2011: first WPT title won
After three years alongside Sebastian Nerone, with whom he won his first WPT tournament in Palma de Mallorca, he teamed up with his childhood friend, Maxi Sánchez. In 2013, they won the prestigious Buenos Aires Open and beat the No. 1 pair Belasteguín / Díaz in the Master final.
In 2014, they repeated the feat and won the Master Final again, once more beating the formidable pair Fernando Belasteguín and Juan Martín Díaz. In 2015, Sanyo formed a duo with Juani Mieres, and together they won the Madrid Open.
2016-2018: winner of the Padel World Championships and world number 1
In 2016, with his new partner, Paquito Navarro, they accumulated victories and finished the year as the second-best pair in the rankings, just behind Belasteguín and Pablo Lima. That year, Sanyo was also selected to represent Argentina at the Padel World Championship in Portugal. Argentina won the title, with Sanyo and Fernando Belasteguín dominating the Spanish pair in the final.
2017 was an intense year for Sanyo and Paquito. They won several titles, although they regularly faced their rivals, Belasteguín and Lima.
In 2018, Sanyo played in a pair again with Maxi Sánchez. Together, they managed to dethrone the dominant pair of Belasteguín and Lima, becoming the first duo in 16 years to break Belasteguín's reign, first with Juan Martín Díaz and then with Pablo Lima. That year, Sanyo became world number 1.
The rest of his professional career
The following year, in 2019, Sanyo and Maxi teamed up again and won five tournaments. However, they were overtaken by Paquito Navarro and Juan Lebrón, finishing the season as world number 2.
In 2020, Sanyo played with the talented Franco Stupaczuk. Although they had great ambitions, they were unable to compete with the season's number 1 pair, Alejandro Galán and Juan Lebrón.
Finally, in 2021, Sanyo teamed up with an old acquaintance, Fernando Belasteguín, with whom he had already played for the Argentine national team. From the outset, they asserted their supremacy by winning the Madrid Open and two other tournaments during the year.
After a spell with Momo Gonzalez, he joined his 25-year-old nephew Agustin Gutierrez to give himself a new lease of life and finish his career in style.
