How do you choose your Oxdog racket?

As with all brands, you should not necessarily choose the best padel racket available, but rather the one best suited to your game.  Several criteria should therefore be taken into account. 

Racket shape: round or diamond?

In padel, several racket shapes are available and can significantly change the way you play with a racket. 

The diamond shape is designed for players looking for power and aggression. The weight is balanced towards the racket head, making overhead shots (smashes, bandejas, viboras) much more effective. However, as the weight is distributed away from your hand, control and manoeuvrability are compromised, especially for balls below the waist. The Ultimate range rackets are diamond-shaped.

The round shape is, unlike the diamond;, a shape that favours ball control and defence. The weight is balanced towards the handle, which enhances manoeuvrability as well as ball control. Very useful for making as few errors as possible, they may nevertheless lack a little explosiveness and power when finishing points forcefully. The Oxdog Sense range includes round rackets. 

Finally, the last shape available is the teardrop, from the Hyper range. Teardrop rackets offer a good balance between control and power, with weight balanced in the centre of the face. Ideal for players seeking as much versatility as possible. But beware, this also means no obvious strength in your game! 

Faces: rigid or flexible? 

Faces are also criteria to take into account, as they determine the rigidity of the racket. Carbon, which Oxdog is known for, and fibreglass are the materials used to make the faces of padel rackets. 

Fibreglass is a fairly flexible material used for its forgiveness. Indeed, rackets made from fibreglass are quite popular with beginners thanks to their accessibility. Ball control is enhanced, helping to minimise the frustrating unforced errors of the early stages.  However, beware of the lack of power and the overly flexible nature of the racket, which may become unsuitable as you progress. 

Carbon faces, on the other hand, are fairly rigid and are only suitable for intermediate or advanced players, as experience in padel is needed to master them. Among all carbon rackets, carbon density can vary from 3k (less dense, more forgiving) to 18k (very dense, very powerful). Most Oxdog rackets are made of carbon and are fairly rigid. 

Foam: Soft or Hard?

The foam is located between the 2 faces and is a crucial element for ball feel as well as their behaviour when leaving the racket, and can be more or less flexible. 

At Oxdog, we use 4 different types of foam: Hard, Medium Plus, Medium and Soft foam. The logic is the same as for the faces: the harder and denser the foam, the more responsive your racket will be and the better its responsiveness on returns. On the other hand, the softer the foam, the more comfortable and controllable your shots will be. However, be aware of the risk of injury that hard foam combined with rigid faces can cause.
