How do you choose your padel racket?
When choosing a padel racket, several factors need consideration, as they can completely change how a player’s shots feel. Unlike women’s padel rackets and children’s padel rackets, men’s models have no weight limit and can sometimes be quite heavy. It’s up to you to choose the racket that gives you the best feel for the ball.
The shape: control or power?
Padel rackets come in three different shapes that define the racket’s "DNA". Diamond-shaped rackets give players the most power thanks to their head-heavy balance, which helps when smashing high balls. However, they are harder to control than round rackets, for example, whose weight is closer to the handle, helping you make fewer mistakes and control your opponent’s balls more effectively. Between the two is the teardrop shape, which has a fairly even balance and is quite versatile.
The faces: which material to choose?
2 materials are used to make the faces of a padel racket: carbon and fibreglass. Fibreglass is used for more "entry-level" rackets because it is less expensive and, above all, much more flexible and forgiving, ideal for beginners who want to learn the ropes with complete peace of mind. Conversely, carbon is a stiffer material and therefore more difficult to master, but it is formidable once you have enough experience. Rarer and therefore more expensive, "high-end" rackets are often made of carbon.
Unlike fibreglass, carbon can have different densities. This is why there are often numbers following the name of the racket, such as 3k for example. This means that there are 3,000 carbon filaments making up the pala. The more filaments there are, the denser and stiffer the racket is, making it powerful but also difficult to control. Some manufacturers use up to 18,000 carbon filaments in their rackets.
Foam: Soft or Hard?
The racket’s foam (also called its core) sits between its two faces and determines how soft it feels. Soft foam makes shots feel more comfortable and gives you greater precision, but it slows the balls down, which can be a drawback for smashes and other powerful shots. Hard foams, by contrast, are stiffer and let you hit hard, explosive balls, at the expense of control. It’s up to you to choose the racket with the construction best suited to your playing style and unlock your true potential!
Men's padel rackets: which one should you choose for your level?
In padel, the features players need in their rackets will vary according to their level and experience on the padel courts. On our website, 4 categories have been created to avoid purchasing mistakes: beginners, intermediates, advanced players and experts. If a beginner player ends up with an expert-level racket, they will struggle to master it because of the advanced technologies it contains, as well as having paid more for it. Conversely, if a good-level player plays with a beginner racket, they will feel as though they are playing below their true level. It is therefore important to choose a suitable racket.
How do I maintain my padel racket to keep it in good condition?
To keep your racket in good condition, it is important to protect it in all circumstances. The first essential accessory is the frame protector. A rubber strip that sticks around the edge of the pala, it absorbs potential impacts against glass, fencing or even your partner's pala. Be careful though, it is not magic: your racket is still fragile and it is important to protect it from all possible impacts.
Another accessory that can be very useful is the racket cover. Like the frame protector, it helps protect the racket between your matches and makes it much easier to carry. Many brands offer covers to dress and protect your palas in all circumstances. For even more protection, you can even use a padel bag to protect your pala as well as all your other belongings to carry all your gear in all circumstances.
Become a great padel player!
Although more and more women are taking up padel, this sport remains (unfortunately) very male-dominated. Most manufacturers therefore offer a wide range of rackets, all different from one another and with their own characteristics. Padel is a fantastic sport, but it can be even better if you play with a racket suited to your style and level of play. That is why Esprit Padel Shop helps you find the pala that suits you best.
