HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR PADEL RACKET
With so many models available, choosing a padel racket that perfectly suits your playing style can be difficult. But don’t worry: you’re in the right place. Once you’ve read this, you’ll be able to make sense of all the different features of padel rackets.
Which racket shape should you choose?
Most padel equipment manufacturers offer rackets in three shapes to suit different playing styles. There are some variations and hybrids of these three shapes, but they are the main racket shapes you’ll find on the market.
- Padel rackets with a diamond shape: this shape focuses on power and explosiveness. With the racket’s weight* balanced towards the top, it gives you more hitting power on high volleys and smashes. Its sweetspot, the area of the racket face where contact with the ball is ideal, also sits quite high. Ideal for hitting your best out-of-court smashes, these rackets are not recommended for beginners, who need to learn to minimise unforced errors. But if you’re comfortable with explosive rackets, read our article on powerful rackets on the blog for more information.
- Round-shaped padel racket: unlike the diamond shape, this shape specialises in ball control. With the weight* towards the bottom of the racket, round-shaped rackets are very manoeuvrable and recommended for beginners, helping them make fewer frustrating errors and enjoy their time on court. The sweetspot is closer to the centre of the racket, making returns feel more intuitive.
- Teardrop-shaped padel racket sits between the other two shapes: neither too focused on control nor too powerful. Its weight* is evenly distributed throughout the racket. Generally recommended for intermediate players, it has no particular strengths or weaknesses. It’s ideal for players who haven’t yet found their playing style or who want to be able to do a bit of everything on court.
Which material should you choose: fibreglass or carbon?
Racket faces are very often made from one of two materials: fibreglass or carbon. It’s important to know which material you feel most comfortable with because it makes a considerable difference to how the racket feels in play.
Fibreglass is a material manufacturers use to make rackets for beginners and intermediate players. Unlike carbon, fibreglass is more flexible and offers more reliable ball control. Many rackets offering excellent value for money use this material. You can find them in our article on rackets under €100.
Carbon is a more premium material used in the most “high-end” rackets. More rigid, carbon is harder to master and is therefore better suited to experienced players. The racket is firmer and more responsive, offering greater precision but slightly less ball control. Many of the most popular rackets in the padel community are made from carbon. The carbon used varies in density. It can be relatively low-density, like 3K carbon, or very dense, reaching 30K in some extreme cases. Naturally, the denser the carbon, the harder it is to control.
Which foam should you choose: FOAM or EVA?
The frame isn’t the only thing that affects how a racket feels when you hit the ball or its playing characteristics. The foam (also called the rubber or core) sits between the racket’s two faces and has a major impact on performance too.
FOAM and EVA foams have fairly similar characteristics and are the two foams most commonly used in padel rackets. However, they come in several versions: Soft, Classic and Hard. These versions change the foam’s density and, in turn, how it feels when you hit the ball.
It’s also worth knowing that combining elements with different characteristics creates many possible types of racket. A round racket can have firm foam, for example, making it a well-balanced option. In any case, all this information is included in the rackets’ product descriptions.
What about your playing level?
The racket you choose also depends on your playing level. A racket that is too demanding for a beginner will be too difficult to master and could slow their progress or increase their risk of injury, as these rackets are often more rigid. Conversely, a racket that is too flexible and has few technical features will not suit an advanced player, and their performance will suffer.
That’s why it’s so important to be honest about your level: don’t overestimate or underestimate yourself if you want to get the most out of playing padel. If you still have questions, don’t hesitate to contact us or ask at your club for the answers you need to keep improving with confidence.
How do you care for your padel racket?
To keep your padel racket in good condition for as long as possible, there are a few tips to follow. First, you need to protect it during matches. Frame protectors are your best friends here. These small adhesive plastic strips can be fitted around the edge of your racket to protect it from knocks against the glass, the fencing or… your partner.
It’s also important to protect your racket while travelling. That’s why padel bags are ideal for carrying your kit with ease. Whether you prefer a backpack, sports bag or even a handbag, you’ll find plenty of options on our site to choose the bag that suits you best and protect your racket from knocks.

However, nothing is exclusive: a racket described as a women’s model can be used by a man, and vice versa. What matters is finding the racket that suits your playing style.
