What are the features of Fila padel rackets?

Among the many padel brands on the market, several have come from other sports, particularly tennis. Fila is one of them and offers all padel players unique rackets. Fila is an Italian brand founded in 1911, but it only began specialising in sportswear in the 1970s. It gradually grew and went on to become the main clothing sponsor of many tennis stars, including Bjorn Borg, Boris Becker and Monica Seles. Hugely popular in the 1990s, the brand then looked to diversify and find a new lease of life, finding an audience in fashion... and padel!

One of the defining features of Fila rackets is, of course, their unmistakable style. Understated and classic, they follow the look the brand has cultivated for years, with stripes and a design straight out of the 1990s! That goes for the rackets and even the Fila padel bags, which are also available. Beyond their looks, they deliver on performance too, with different rackets designed for every player.

How do you choose your Fila padel racket?

To choose a padel racket, you need to consider a range of factors to find the racket best suited to your playing style.

Shape: power, control or balance?

The first thing to consider is, of course, the shape. It sets your racket’s playing style from the outset. The diamond shape, for example, is often chosen by players looking for power. With more weight towards the top of the racket, diamond rackets are highly effective for overhead shots such as smashes and viboras, thanks to their momentum. Bear in mind, though, that this weight balance can make the racket slightly less manoeuvrable.

At the other end of the spectrum are round-shaped rackets, which have more weight towards the handle, giving you excellent ball control and superb manoeuvrability. They can, however, fall a little short on aggression and power. It’s a shape we often recommend to beginners to maximise control and avoid those frustrating unforced errors when starting out.

Between the two is the teardrop shape, a hybrid shape where the racket’s weight is centred in the middle. Ideal for an all-round game, it strikes a balance between power and control. But bear in mind: no weaknesses also means no standout strengths. It’s up to you to identify the shape best suited to your game.

The faces: carbon or fibreglass?

The faces are also an important factor because they determine how stiff your racket is. Carbon fibre is a fairly stiff material that adds consistency and explosiveness to your shots. It can be quite difficult to master at first, so we recommend carbon rackets for more experienced players.

On the other hand, there’s fibreglass, a more flexible material that offers much more control. Most beginner rackets are made from fibreglass, helping you make fewer mistakes and giving you greater control over the balls. As your experience and level improve, however, fibreglass can start to hold you back because it lacks power. That’s when it’s time to change racket and opt for one made from a carbon-and-fibreglass blend, or go straight for a carbon racket.

The foam: soft or firm?

The foam sits between the faces. Its density varies and also affects how the ball feels on impact. If the foam is very dense, it is described as Hard and adds power but also stiffness to your racket. Be careful: too much stiffness in the faces and foam can cause injuries, particularly to the elbow. If the foam is described as soft, you’ll have greater playing comfort and find it easier to control your shots.
