The legendary Wilson brand is entering the world of padel!
The iconic American brand Wilson is making its mark in padel. Drawing on its extensive experience in tennis, the American manufacturer, founded in 1913, offers quality rackets that combine expertise and innovation. Also active in golf, American football and basketball, Wilson is one of the biggest names in world sport and intends to live up to that reputation in padel with a wide range of quality products, including padel rackets as well as Wilson padel balls and Wilson padel shoes.
What are the characteristics of Wilson padel rackets?
Wilson padel rackets are known for their cutting-edge technology, particularly their foams, which are among the best on the market. Wilson is no slouch when it comes to innovation either, introducing detachable wrist straps for greater personalisation and hygiene.
Another distinguishing feature is the style. This year, Wilson is back with a distinctive look: solid red, with just the brand name on the side. It’s a great way to stand out. With its clothing range, you can complete your Wilson padel clothing and look your best on court.
Why choose Wilson for your padel racket?
A renowned tennis racket brand that has sponsored greats such as Roger Federer and the Williams sisters, Wilson is following the same approach in padel with the legendary Fernando Belsteguin by its side, a padel icon and perhaps the greatest player of all time. With his special range, simply called "Bela", try to recreate the Argentine’s shots with effective, high-performance rackets. Other ranges are available too, including Ultra, Blade and Pro Staff, the equivalent of Roger Federer’s range in tennis. Impressive, to say the least.
So how do you choose your Wilson racket?
As with any padel brand, it’s important to consider all the specifications when choosing a racket, so that it is as well suited to your game as possible.
Shape: diamond, round or teardrop?
First, consider the racket’s shape in relation to your playing style. For players who like to attack, the diamond shape is the most effective. With the weight towards the racket head, it favours powerful shots and smashes at the expense of some control. You therefore need some experience to handle diamond-shaped rackets.
For players who prefer more control, the round shape is better suited, as the racket’s weight is closer to the handle. This makes it easier to avoid unforced errors, though you sacrifice a little power. This shape is often recommended for beginners or players who want to improve without getting too frustrated.
Finally, for greater versatility, the teardrop shape is ideal. Between diamond and round, this shape offers an all-round game. But be warned: no weaknesses also means no particular strengths. It’s up to you to choose the racket shape that suits you best.
The faces: stiff or flexible?
Beyond its shape, the material used for the racket faces is also essential when choosing a padel racket. There are two options: fibreglass and carbon.
Fibreglass is a flexible material that feels comfortable to play with and is easy on the body. It is often recommended for beginners and intermediate players because of the comfort it offers. Higher-level players, however, may prefer carbon: a more demanding material that works wonders when handled well.
Let’s talk about carbon. A rarer and therefore more expensive material, it is stiffer and offers more power and responsiveness when striking balls. Control can suffer a little, however, so we recommend carbon faces for more experienced players. Carbon also comes in several densities, ranging from 1k to 24k. The more "k" (thousands of carbon monofilaments), the denser and therefore stiffer the racket. Be sure to check each racket’s product details for these specifications.
The foam: Soft or Hard?
The third and final factor to consider is the foam, also known as the core. Located between the two faces, it plays a key role in how stiff the racket feels. Soft foam increases playing comfort and gives a cushioned feel when you hit the ball. It also adds control. By contrast, Hard foam adds firmness and responsiveness. Bear in mind, though, that this type of foam can increase the risk of elbow injuries, particularly tendinitis.
Wilson is about more than just padel rackets
But the American brand hasn’t stopped there: it has developed several additional ranges to suit every player. To carry and protect your gear, nothing beats a Wilson padel bag that matches your racket for a coordinated look. Most of these bags also have a separate shoe compartment, so you can keep your shoes away from the rest of your gear and stop odours and dirt spreading. Handy!
There’s more to put in your bag, too: the American brand offers a wide range of Wilson padel accessories to support your game and make playing more comfortable. Try Wilson overgrips, among the most popular on the market, for maximum comfort and grip. Detachable wrist straps are also available for added comfort, hygiene and personalisation.
