The foam: Soft or Hard?

The foam, also known as the core, sits between the racket’s two faces. It partly determines playing comfort and how your arm reacts on impact. Hard foam is stiff and fairly responsive, helping to give the ball extra power and precision. However, it can be a little harder to control and may also cause elbow injuries due to vibrations. 

Soft foam is, as its name suggests, softer and makes contact with the ball more comfortable. It also reduces vibrations and therefore injuries that can affect the joints. Be aware, though, that it tends to slow the ball down and may reduce the punch of your shots. 

The racket faces: flexible or stiff? 

The racket faces are essential when choosing a racket, as they are the first part to make contact with the ball during a shot. That is why the material matters. Two main materials are commonly used: carbon and fibreglass. Fibreglass is a flexible, fairly forgiving material that improves playing comfort. It is often recommended for beginners who want to prioritise precision and ease of play. 

By contrast, carbon is a stiffer material that is harder to play with but devastating when used well. Its stiffness and natural responsiveness favour attacking play. Carbon comes in several densities, indicated by K ratings (3K means 3,000 carbon monofilaments). The higher the number, the denser, stiffer and more responsive the carbon — but the harder it is to play with.
