Oxdog, the new kid on the international padel scene!

Padel is a growing sport that develops day by day, along with everyone involved in it. Founded in Sweden in 2011, Oxdog was originally a brand specialising in floorball, a Swedish sport similar to hockey that is played with a stick. Since floorball sticks are made from carbon fibre, the brand moved into another sport that uses the material in 2022: padel. To help develop its rackets and give its communications real impact, the brand has partnered with none other than Ramiro Choya, a legend of Spanish padel and an accomplished coach on the professional circuit. How do you choose your Oxdog racket?

As with any brand, you do not necessarily need to choose the best padel racket available, but rather the one best suited to your game.  There are several factors to consider. 

Racket shape: round or diamond?

In padel, several racket shapes are available, and each can significantly change how a racket plays. 

The diamond shape is designed for players seeking power and aggression. The weight is distributed towards the racket head, making overhead shots (smashes, bandejas and viboras) much more effective. However, with the weight further from your hand, control and manoeuvrability suffer, especially on balls below waist height. The rackets in the Ultimate range are diamond-shaped.

The round shape is, unlike the diamond shape, designed to favour ball control and defence. The weight is distributed towards the handle, improving manoeuvrability and ball control. Round rackets are very useful for keeping errors to a minimum, although they can lack a little explosiveness and power when finishing points decisively. The Oxdog Sense range includes round rackets. 

Finally, the last shape on offer is the teardrop, found in the Hyper range. Teardrop rackets offer a balance between control and power, with the weight centred on the face. They are ideal for players looking for maximum versatility. Bear in mind, though, that this also means no obvious standout strength in your game! 

Racket faces: stiff or flexible? 

Racket faces are another factor to consider: they determine how stiff the racket feels. Carbon, the material Oxdog is known for, and fibreglass are used to make the faces of padel rackets. 

Fibreglass is a fairly flexible material valued for its forgiveness. Fibreglass rackets are particularly popular with beginners because they are easy to play with. They offer greater ball control, helping to minimise the frustrating unforced errors common when starting out.  Be aware, though, that their lack of power and very flexible feel may become limiting as you improve. 

Carbon faces, by contrast, are fairly stiff and best suited to intermediate or advanced players, as mastering them takes padel experience. Among carbon rackets, the carbon density can vary from 3k (less dense and more forgiving) to 18k (very dense and very powerful). Most Oxdog rackets have carbon faces and are fairly stiff. 

Foam: Soft or Hard?

The foam sits between the 2 faces and plays a crucial role in how the balls feel and how they come off the racket. It can be more or less flexible. 

Oxdog uses 4 different types of foam: Hard, Medium Plus, Medium and Soft. The principle is the same as with the faces: the harder and denser the foam, the more responsive your racket will be on returns. Conversely, the softer the foam, the more comfortable your shots will feel and the easier they will be to control. Bear in mind, though, that hard foam combined with stiff faces can increase the risk of injury.
